What do we want from sociology?

What this suggests to me is that piecemeal inquiry into specific social phenomena is a more promising approach than grand unifying sociological theories. And this in turn suggests the metaphor of toolbox rather than orrery -- a collection of explanatory hypotheses rather than a unifying theoretical system.

このことは、社会学の壮大な統一理論よりは、ある社会現象に関する部分部分の調査（piecemeal inquiry）の方が手法として期待できることを意味しているように思う。比喩的に言えば、太陽系儀よりも道具箱の方が良い、というわけだ。つまり、統一的な理論体系よりは、説明のための仮説の集合、ということである。

「社会学って、何やってるんだろう？」 ― あるいは、そもそも「社会学って、何なんだろう??」 ― とは、普段からの僕の疑問点。社会学を実際にやっている人が、このエントリをどう見るのかはわからないが、個人的には、この説明で、わりと納得できた気がする。

“grand unifying sociological theories”を掲げる学問 ― economicsはその典型 ― は“一神教”的で、社会学は“多神教”的なのかも知れない。そのアナロジーで考えると、経済学が、他の学派の人たちから、しばしば鬱陶しがられる理由も分からなくはない気がする。
